The Vandals punched their ticket to the third round of the IHSA 3A Playoffs with a 23-20 win over Mt. Carmel on Saturday afternoon.
With the game tied at 20-20, senior kicker Cameron Withers connected on a 34-yard field goal with 5.4 seconds left to give Vandals the win. After the game, Withers says he was doing his best to not really think and to just kick like he knew he could.
The Vandals got 2 TDs in the game from senior Thomas Ritchey who had a 66-yard TD run in the 1st quarter and a 5-yard run in the 3rd quarter and seniors Matthew Wells and Garrett Austin connected for a 40-yard TD through the air in the second quarter to account for the Vandals scoring in the game.
Vandals Coach Jason Clay says it was a total team effort and win and they’ll get back to work this week and get ready to hit the road in Round 3.
The Vandals are 11-o on the season, which is the first time in school history the Vandals have won 11 games. The Vandals will go on the road to play at Williamsville in the quarterfinals next Saturday.
