SEB Holds Off Vandalia Late To Complete 4-3 Comeback Win

Vandalia took an early lead but St. Elmo-Brownstown got their offense moving late to tie the game, then take the lead and hold the Lady Vandals off for a close 4-3 win as the Lady Eagles picked up their fourth straight win. Vandalia opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as an RBI single from Briley Sefton scored Bella Walk for a 1-0 lead. An inning later the Lady Vandals doubled their lead to 2-0 as and RBI ground out from Addy Cearlock scored Liah Hoyle from third after Hoyle reached base on a triple. That two-run lead held until the fifth inning. In the top of the fifth, Auni Wollin singled to centerfield and Cami Haslett followed with a walk. Macy Claycomb then reached base on a fielder’s choice as the Lady Eagles had the bases loaded with just one out. Kadence Speagle put SEB on the scoreboard as she doubled to centerfield and both Wollin and C. Haslett crossed the plate to tie the game up at 2-2. After holding Vandalia scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, the Lady Eagles again got things rolling with one out in the sixth inning. Brooklyn Landrus doubled to centerfield before a big RBI triple to center field by Izzy Orr brought in Landrus and gave SEB their first lead of the game. Orr scored just one batter later, coming in on an RBI ground from Wollin pushing the Lady Eagles lead to 4-2. The Lady Vandals were able to pull to within a run in the bottom half of the inning advantage of an SEB error on a hit from B. Sefton that allowed Elaina Hagy to score from second base and cut it to a 4-3 ballgame. SEB again got a runner on base with one out in the top of the seventh after a single by Speagle, but she was stranded on base to keep the Lady Eagles lead at just a run, 4-3. Down to its last at bat, Vandalia also got a runner on base when Hoyle drew a one-out walk but a strikeout and a groundout closed out the inning and sealed the SEB win. The Lady Eagles are now 5-3 on the season and will play again today at home when they take on Hutsonville-Palestine.
