St. Elmo-Brownstown softball grabbed the lead in the first inning and continued to fight off Odin-Patoka-Sandoval the rest of the way and held on to win the Battle of the Eagles, 9-8, on Thursday in Odin. SEB went with a small ball strategy early as their first three batters of the game reached base on bunt singles. Macey Sapp sacrificed in the first run of the game and a single from Brooklyn Landrus brought in another for a 2-0 SEB lead. Izzy Orr hit a ground ball to the pitcher and OPS committed two errors on the play as Seb put two more runs across the plate for a 4-0 lead. OPS countered in the bottom of the first with three runs of their own and cut the SEB lead down to a run, 4-3. SEB was able to score one run in the second on a passed ball and pushed their lead to 5-3 and held OPS scoreless in the bottom half of the inning to maintain the lead. In the top of the third inning with runners at the corners, Auni Wollin singled to center field and with runners again at the corners after that play, Cami Haslett sacrificed to the pitcher as those two plays brought in two more runs for a 7-3 SEB lead. OPS responded with pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut SEB’s lead back to two runs, 7-5. Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth inning and then each put up a run in both the fifth and sixth innings as SEB led 9-7 to start the seventh inning. Orr reached base on a single but was stranded aboard as SEB held their lead but OPS had the last at bat of the game. OPS put their first two hitters of the inning on base on an SEB error and a single and a run came in to score on a groundout to put OPS with two outs in the inning and trailing SEB by one, 9-8. Freshman pitcher Kadance Speagle was able to get a strikeout to end the game though as SEB hung for the 9-8 win on the road and snap their three game losing streak. SEB is now 2-3 on the season and heads right back out on the road today for an Egyptian Illini Conference matchup at Martinsville.
