South Central Wins Season Opener Behind Johnson's No-Hitter

After weather knocked out their original season opener on the road on Tuesday, the South Central Lady Cougars opened up at home on Friday with a dominant 17-0 win over Okaw Valley as senior Lauren Johnson tossed a no hitter. After Okaw Valley was able to get one runner on in the top of the first but was held scoreless, South Central went to work in the bottom half of the inning with a two RBI triple from Kinlee Thompson putting South Central on the scoreboard with a 2-0 lead. That two run lead jumped to 5-0 on RBI singles from Johnson and Emmie Ruholl and Ruholl then scored on a wild pitch for a 6-0 lead by the end of the first inning. Okaw Valley went down one, two, three in the top of the second and the Lady Cougars picked up where they left off with an RBI single from Thompson bringing in another run for a 7-0 lead. Johnson and Zoey Feldhake both reached on errors that allowed two more runs to cross the plate for a 9-0 lead. Another RBI single from E. Ruholl brought in the tenth run of the game and after a pair of outs Addy Ruholl singled to bring in a pair of runs and push the lead out further to 12-0. A bases loaded walk from Johnson followed by a two RBI single t center field from Feldhake brought in three more runs as the lead grew to 15-0, but that would be it for the second inning as a fielder’s choice out ended the second. Okaw Valley was able to get a base runner on by walk in the top of the third inning but South Central continued to hold them scoreless and then tacked on two runs in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI double from Ad. Ruholl and a single from Aubrey Sullens as the Lady Cougars went up 17-0 before the inning ended on the base paths. A South Central error allowed one base runner again for Okaw Valley in the top of the fourth, but Johnson would get a pair of strikeouts to end the game as South Central closed out the 17-0 run rule win. Johnson got the no-hitter on the mound as she faced just 15 batters and threw only 57 pitches in the four inning win, allowing no hits or runs and racking up 9 strikeouts while giving up a pair of walks. The Lady Cougars kick off their season a 1-0 and will have a busy week ahead with games on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and a tournament on Saturday.
