SEB Can't Hold Off Shelbyville in Close 9-7 Loss

St. Elmo-Brownstown softball was able to get out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the third inning but couldn’t hold off the Shelbyville comeback late as they took a 9-7 loss in their first road game of the season on Wednesday. After two scoreless inning to start the game, the Lady Eagles showed patience at the plate as all three batters due up to start the top of the third inning went to a full count before holding off on ball four to each get on base, loading things up with no outs. Dayana Haslett then came back from an 0-2 count to draw a walk and bring the first run in and was followed up by a fielder’s choice from Macey Sapp with all runners being safe and another run crossing the plate for a 2-0 SEB lead. Brooklyn Landrus hit an RBI single to third to push the lead to 3-0 before an error on a ground ball from Izzy Orr allowed two more runs to score and extend the Lady Eagles lead to 5-0. An RBI single from Auni Wollin and an RBI groundout from C Ledbetter put two more runs on the scoreboard for a 7-0 lead before the Eagles had a pickoff at third and a strikeout end the inning. Shelbyville was able to respond with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the SEB lead down to 7-4 and after a scoreless top of the fourth for the Eagles, the Lady Rams tacked on another two runs to cut the SEB lead to 7-6. The Eagles got runners on first and third in the top of the fifth but couldn’t bring anyone home and they held Shelbyville to just one runner on base and the runner was left on base as SEB ended the inning with a pair of groundouts. SEB was held scoreless again in the top of the sixth inning before Shelbyville took their first lead of the game with a three-run bottom of the sixth playing small ball with three singles, a double and a walk to drive the runs in and put SEB down 9-7 heading to the seventh inning. A one out single and an error put a runner at second for the Eagles, but a pair of groundouts ended the half inning and the game as SEB suffered the tough 9-7 loss. The Eagles drop to 1-1 on the season and they will be back at home today to take on Cumberland in their National Trail Conference opener at Deken Park.
