Vandals Struggle Against Coal City, Fall in Dual Team State Championship Match


Vandalia wrestling fought back in their later matchups, but a flurry of early wins by Coal City had the Vandals on their heels and they struggled to fully recover in a 43-23 loss in the Championship match of the IHSA 1A Dual Team State Finals on Saturday. The Vandals made their fifth overall appearance in a Dual Team State Championship match and the second in a row as they earned a chance to try and avenge last year’s Championship loss. After the Vandals got down 9-0, a win by Fall for Ross Miller at 190 brought them back to within three points, 9-6 with three weight classes down. The Coalers then got three wins by Fall and one by Major Decision to pull away, 31-6. The Vandals got themselves back in it with three wins in a row by Riley Hinton at 120, Preston Waughtel at 126 and Max Philpot at 132 to cut the Coal City lead to 31-17. The Vandals however then suffered three straight tough losses as Coal City sealed the win over the Vandals 43-23. Vandalia ends their season with a dual team record of 29-3 and have finished in the top 4 at State for the 12th time and in the top 2 for the 5th time.
