Vandals Fall to Fairfield in Regional Championship to End Season


Vandalia boys basketball fell behind early and couldn’t chase down Fairfield as they suffered a 67-56 loss in the Championship game of their own Vandalia 2A Regional. Fairfield opened scoring with a 5-0 run before Vandalia could get on the board and the cut it to 5-4 with back to back baskets. Fairfield continued their run however and the Vandals trailed 18-7 at the end of the first quarter. Carter Robbins connected on a three-point play early in the second to cut it to 18-10 but the Mules pushed their lead out to 28-11 before Robbins again sparked a Vandals 7-2 run to close it back to an 11-point game as they trailed 30-19 at halftime. The Vandals made some adjustments at the start of the third quarter and Andrew Casey sparked a run with seven points in three possessions as the Vandals cut it to a six point game, trailing 32-26 with just under six minutes to go in the quarter. Fairfield went on a 12-4 run over the final five minutes and again the Vandals trailed by double digits, 44-30, at the end of the third quarter. Vandalia kept fighting in the fourth quarter as Qwentyn Stombaugh and Casey combined for 22 points in the quarter and the Vandals outscored the Mules 26-23, but the early deficit was too much for Vandalia to come back from as the Mules handed the Vandals the 67-56 loss. Vandalia ends their season at 19-15 but ended on a strong run of winning 9 of their last 12 games.
