Vandalia's Waughtel Claims 126lb Championship at IHSA Individual Wrestling State Finals, Stays Undefeated on Season


Three-time individual state wrestling qualifier and Vandalia junior Preston Waughtel is now a two-time State Champion as he defeated Obadiah Willis of Chicago Hope Academy by Decision in the Championship match of the 126lb weight class at the IHSA 1A Individual State Wrestling Finals Saturday night. Waughtel finishes the tournament at 4-0 after he got a Tech Fall win (17-0 in 2:12) in the Preliminary Round, got a win by 1-0 Decision in the Championship Quarterfinals and then a win by Fall in 5:24 in the Championship Semifinals before his Championship win over Willis. Waughtel is undefeated on the season, the second time he has claimed a state title with an undefeated season as he was a State Champion his freshman year at 113lbs going unbeaten and then last year claimed 2nd place at 120lbs in a 2-loss season as a sophomore. He is the 7th overall Individual Wrestling State Champion for Vandalia wrestling.
