Altamont staged a fourth quarter comeback attempt, but couldn’t fully overcome their 19-point deficit, as they suffered the 35-26 loss to Dieterich in the semifinals of the North Clay 1A Reginal on Monday night. Dieterich took the early lead with a pair of baskets before Altamont got on the board with a basket by Avery Aldrich to cut it to a 4-2 game. After a Dieterich free throw pushed their lead to 5-2, another Altamont basket cut the lead to 5-4. Altamont got the ball back with 4.5 seconds to go and Reagan Kuenstler went coast to coast but couldn’t get the runner to go as the quarter ended with Altamont trailing Dieterich 5-4. After scoreless two and a half minutes to start the second quarter, Altamont got a free throw from Kuenstler and then a minute and a half later got a basket by Aldrich at the halfway mark of the quarter to take their first lead, 7-5. A late basket by the Maroons tied the game up at 7-7 where the game would stand at halftime. Dieterich went on a 14-0 run to open the second half and led Altamont 21-7 with 2:42 remaining in the quarter before Altamont got their first basket of the half from Aldrich to cut it to 21-9, but the Maroons quickly responded with a 9-2 run to push their lead to 30-11 to end the third. Altamont showed some fight to start the fourth quarter with back to back baskets from Aldrich and Quincy Niermann to cut Dieterich’s lead to 30-15 with 6:10 to go in the game. The two teams would trade baskets over the next four minutes with Dieterich leading 33-19 with 2:46 remaining. The Lady Indians were able to put together a 7-2 run in the final couple minutes of the game but did not have enough to make the full comeback as they suffered the 35-26 loss. Altamont’s season come to and end with a record of 11-16. Dieterich improves to 19-9 on the season and face Brownstown-St. Elmo in the Championship game on Thursday at 6:00pm.
