Altamont boys basketball struggled to get their offense moving in the first half but mounted a strong comeback attempt in the second half that fell short as they were handed a 54-44 loss at Class 1A #2 ranked Lawrenceville on Saturday afternoon. Altamont was held to just four points on a pair of baskets by Kade Milleville and struggled to get defensive stops as they trailed Lawrenceville 19-4 at the end of the first quarter. Altamont was able to slow Lawrenceville’s scoring in the second but only managed seven point themselves as they were outscored 10-7 and trailed 29-11 at halftime. Altamont made some adjustments in the third quarter and got some offensive rhythm going and went on an 18-9 run led by seven points from Cooper McManaway to cut the Lawrenceville lead down to 38-29 by the end of the quarter. The game tightened up in the fourth quarter and while Lawrenceville would do their scoring from the floor, Altamont did most of theirs from the free throw line going 9 of 11 but they were outscored 16-15 in the quarter and Lawrenceville was able to close out the game and Altamont fell 54-44. Altamont is now 18-10 on the season and will have a big National Trail Conference matchup on Tuesday as they are on the road at Effingham take on St. Anthony. It will be a rematch of the NTC Tournament Championship Game from just two weeks ago when a last second buzzer beater by the Bulldogs handed Altamont a 51-50 loss.
