Ramsey-Mulberry Grove Gets by CHBC in Overtime Game

After leading a good portion of the game, Ramsey-Mulberry Grove had to overcome a fourth quarter surge by CHBC and then hold the Lady Bobcats scoreless in the overtime period as the Lady Rams got a 40-37 overtime win to wrap up the regular season and Egyptian Illini Conference play for both teams. Prior to the game, CHBC honored their lone senior Ryleigh Sarver in her final home game. Sarver then opened the games scoring with a three pointer to put the Lady Bobcats up 3-0. Ramsey answered with a 8-0 run though including a four-point play from Mia Waggoner after she was fouled on a right wing three-pointer and hit the ensuing free throw after the box out foul and the Lady Rams led CHCB 8-3 to end the quarter. CHBC again scored first in the second quarter but Ramsey outscored the Lady Bobcats 11-6 in the quarter behind seven points from Anna Benhoff and a three-pointer from Lyla Mollett with Ramsey taking a 19-9 lead at halftime. CHBC closed their deficit to six points with back to back baskets from Carissa Wakefield and Lena Bowlin to start the second half and the Lady Bobcats outscored the Lady Rams 14-11 but continued to trail 30-23 as the game moves to the fourth quarter. After Ramsey scored to start the fourth quarter, CHBC got hot, going on a 10-0 run with five of those points from Harper Lilly as the Bobcats took the lead 33-32 with 2:14 left in the game. A left wing three-pointer from Waggoner at the 1:49 left mark put Ramsey back on top 35-33 but four straight made free throws from Bowlin over the next minute and a half put CHBC back on top 37-35 with 23.6 seconds to go in the game. Benhoff hit a basket for Ramsey to tie the game back up at 37-37 with ten seconds left and then the Rams fouled Bowlin to put the Lady Bobcat back at the line with 5.5 seconds. Bowlin wasn’t able to connect on those free throws and regulation would end with the teams still knotted up at 37-37 to send it to overtime. With four minutes on the clock for overtime, both teams committed turnovers in their first possessions in OT and after another turnover, Ramsey scored on their third possession on a basket by Waggoner for a 39-37 lead over CHBC. Both teams struggled to score over the next few minutes until Ramsey would foul Waggoner on two consecutive inbounds plays to get to the foul limit to put her at the line with 3.4 seconds left. Waggoner hit one of two free throws and that would be it for the game’s scoring as Ramsey pulled out the 40-37 overtime win.
