Vandals Fall to Sullivan in Double OT


The Vandalia Vandals saw their 4-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday, falling to the Sullivan Redskins 66-56 in double-overtime. The Vandals got out to a hot start in the first quarter, outscoring the Redskins 19-11, highlighted by a 6-point quarter from Qwentyn Stombaugh and a 5-point quarter from Carter Robbins. Sullivan would begin to chip away at the deficit in the second quarter, going on a 13-6 run, but Vandalia still led 25-24 at halftime. The Redskins would outscore the Vandals 14-9 in the third quarter and would enter the fourth with a 38-34 lead. The two teams would trade baskets in the fourth quarter, with Andrew Casey hitting a three-pointer late to tie the game at 48. The Vandals would have an opportunity to win the game in regulation, but the potential winning three-pointer would rim out, sending the game into overtime. Sullivan and Vandalia would continue to trade baskets and the lead, with the Redskins having a 54-52 lead, but a layup from Casey with 1 second left would send the game into a second overtime. The Vandals would be held to just two points in the second overtime period, and the Redskins would take advantage, knocking down several free throws en route to a 12-2 scoring advantage, coming away with the 66-56 win. The loss drops the Vandals to 14-13 on the season. The Vandals will be back on the road on Tuesday for an SCC Matchup with Litchfield.
