St. Elmo-Brownstown held off a second half run by CHBC to pick up a 50-46 win in both teams final game of the National Trail Conference Tournament on Thursday night. CHBC took an early 5-2 lead but SEB tied things up at 5-5 and the Eagles were able to take the lead and pull out to a 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles pushed their lead out to 24-17 midway through the second quarter before CHBC was able to slow their turnover troubles in the latter part of the quarter and stuck with the Eagles in the final few minutes and held the SEB lead to just eight points, 29-21, at halftime. After neither team was able to score in the first two and a half minutes of the third quarter, the two teams traded baskets as the Eagles maintained an eight-point lead 37-29 with just over two minutes to go in the quarter. The Bobcats quickly flipped the momentum and frantically picked up their scoring, going on a 6-0 run that pulled them to within two points of the Eagles, 37-35. A pair of SEB free throws put the Eagles back up by four points, 39-35, but a CHBC basket with nine second left in the quarter cut it to a one possession game, 39-37 to end the third quarter as an SEB shot at the buzzer rimmed out. A 4-0 CHBC run to open the fourth quarter put the Bobcats on top 41-39 with just under six minutes remaining in the game but SEB tied things up at 41-41. With CHBC clinging to a 46-45 lead, the teams got a little sloppy, trading turnovers, with neither team able to score before SEB regained the lead 47-46 with just over a minute to go in the game. A trio of made free throws by the Eagles in the final 20.7 seconds put SEB up 50-46 and a right corner three-point attempt by CHBC fell short in the closing seconds as the Eagles held off the Bobcats for the 50-46 win. SEB is now 12-11 on the season and will get back to regular season NTC action on Tuesday when they play at Dieterich. CHBC drops to 9-13 on the season and they switch gears to Egyptian Illini Conference play when they play at Mulberry Grove on Tuesday.
