Pro Wire Athlete of the Week

Our Pro Wire Athletes of the Week for the week of January 17 are Vandalia senior wrestler Dillon Hinton, the Vandalia wrestling team and South Central junior basketball player Westin Neilson.

Hinton became the winningest Vandalia wrestler on Thursday night as the Vandals swept the Triad Quad going 3-0. Hinton got three wins on the night, getting a win by Fall in 1:08 against Litchfield and a win by Fall in 3:03 against Triad. It was his first win of the evening though against Highland, a forfeit win, that gave Hinton his 177th career victory and made him the all-time wins leader for Vandalia wrestling, surpassing Jarek Wehrle for the top spot. Hinton is now at 179 wins and counting with a month and a half of the season remaining to add on to that total.

The Vandalia wrestling team put on a very good showing at the Princeton Invitational Tournament bringing home a second place team finish from one of the toughest tournaments of the season. The Vandals had three individual champions with Preston Waughtel at 126, Max Philpot at 132 and Ross Miller at 190 all grabbing titles while also having a few top 3 finishes with Dillon Hinton at 150 taking second place, Brody Matthews at 138 taking third and Eli Mabry at 144 taking third.

Neilson, a junior guard for the Cougars, hit a three-pointer from the left wing with about six minutes to go in South Central’s loss to Windsor/Stew-Stras on Tuesday to reach the 1,000 career point milestone. Neilson is the 13th South Central basketball player to reach the mark and with 1,003 career points and counting, he has the remainder of this season and his senior season to continue tacking on to that total.
