Altamont boys basketball pulled off a big upset on Saturday night, capping off “Mega Day” with a thrilling 53-42 win over the top-ranked Woodlawn Cardinals at home. The Indians got on the board first with a free throw and then after a 4-4 tie, went on an 8-5 run backed by three straight baskets from Zaine Miller to go up 10-9 late in the quarter. A pair of baskets from Kade Milleville and Parker Bell capped the Altamont scoring in the frame and gave them a 14-9 lead to end the first. The Cardinals went on a 10-4 run early in the second quarter to grab the lead 19-18, but the Indians responded with a big three-pointer from Miller, a bucket from Jacob Johnson and a free throw from Bell to hold a three-point lead at halftime, 24-21. Altamont opened the second half with a McManaway basket and Woodlawn responded with one of their own to make it 26-23 with the Indians still leading. Altamont then ripped off a 10-0 run with threes from Milleville and Bell bookended by baskets from Miller and Blake Berg as their lead grew to 36-23 before Woodlawn called a timeout with 1:19 remaining in the quarter. The Indians tacked on another four points to Woodlawn’s three after the timeout as the Indian lead stood at 40-26 heading into the fourth quarter. The Cardinals chipped away at the Indians lead with a 8-0 run to start the fourth and cut the game to 40-34. Buckets from Bell, Milleville and Johnson extended the lead back out to 46-34 with under three minutes to go in the game. Woodlawn again put together an 8-0 run and cut the Altamont lead down to 46-42 but that would be the last scoring from the Cardinals allowed by the Indians as back to back baskets from McManaway, a pair of free throws from Miller and one more from Milleville pushed the Altamont lead out further and finished off the upset win over the Cardinals, 53-42. Altamont moves to 9-7 on the season and they will look to build off their big Saturday win heading into the coming week as they host Central A&M on Tuesday and then jump back into National Trail Conference play on the road Friday at North Clay.
