Altamont Can't Overcome Rough Second Quarter in Loss at Newton

Altamont boys basketball got off to a good start and finished strong, but a rough second quarter deficit was too much to overcome as the Indians fell 55-45 at Newton on Tuesday night. Altamont and Newton kept pace with each in the first quarter, each hitting four field goals with the only difference come as Altamont hit one of four free throw opportunities and the Eagles were two of two as Newton grabbed a slim 10-9 lead over the Indians. Altamont would struggle in the second quarter though as they were held to just six points coming on a pair of Parker Bell three-pointers as they were outscored 20-6 in the quarter and trailed 30-15 at halftime. The third quarter would be a tight one again as the two teams both put 13 points on the scoreboard as Zaine Miller hit for five points and Kade Milleville and Jacob Johnson each tallied five in the quarter, but the Indians still trailed by 15 points, 43-28, heading into the fourth quarter. Altamont was able to put together their best offensive quarter with 17 points, hitting six field goals and going four of five from the free throw line while holding Newton to three field goals and watching as the Eagles went just six of 13 from the free throw line, but the 17-12 advantage in the quarter only allowed them to cut heir deficit down to 10 points as they took the 55-45 loss. Altamont drops to 2-2 on the season with the loss and will be aiming to bounce back when they return home on Friday and will host South Central in their second National Trail Conference game of the season.
