Brownstown-St. Elmo suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling to Highland in a close game, but bounced back with a win over host Pana on Saturday evening to finish pool play at 2-1 at the Pana Thanksgiving Girls Tournament. In their first game, the Lady Bombers played the Lady Bulldogs close, but trailed 13-9 at the end of the first quarter and that would be the difference in the game as BSE was outscored by Highland by just one point in the second, third and fourth quarters as they could not cut down the early four point deficit as they took the 41-34 loss. BSE wrote a different story in the second game, however, as they ran out to an early lead, 12-0, on Pana before allowing the first Panthers basket with 2:29 left in the first. After leading 13-6 to wrap the opening quarter, BSE had to fight off a Pana perimeter shooting attack in the second quarter, but maintained a 31-22 lead at halftime. After trading baskets to open the second half, a 14-5 run by the Lady Bombers pushed their lead out to 48-31 to end the third quarter. Pana continued their three point shooting attack in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Bombers continued to hold off the Panthers, outscoring them by one in the quarter, to close out the 64-46 win. BSE moves to 4-1 on the season and finish pool play at 2-1. Their pool play record puts them in a 3-way tie for first in the pool after Lincoln beat Highland earlier in the day to put all three teams at 2-1. The final pool play standings will have to be determined by tiebreaker situations, meaning BSE will have to await word to find out where they land and who their opponent will be in the crossover round on Friday. A first or second place pool play finish would give them a path to the Championship game, but if they fall to third place in the pool play standings, the highest place they would be able to play for would be fifth place despite their 2-1 record in pool play.
