The Vandals took the Greenville Comets’ best shot on Friday night and were still able to come away with the 28 to 18 win at Don Stout Field.
On the opening kickoff, the Greenville Comets attempted–and were able to recover–an onside kick. The Comets then took that bonus possession and turned it into a TD just a short time later on a Dayton Oliver 26 yard run just 1:04 into the game. The 2 point conversion was good and the Comets held an early 8 to 0 lead. And, that lead would hold up for a long time. The Vandals offense could not get fully untracked, although they did lose a touchdown on a penalty in the first half. The Vandals got a break when the Comets fumbled the football with 1 minute remaining before halftime and the Vandals recovered. The Vandals immediately turned that into points as Qwentyn Stombaugh connected with Kohnor Depew for a 33 yard touchdown and then the 2 point conversion made it 8 to 8 at halftime.
In the second half, the Comets got a big return to start their opening 2nd half drive at midfield and then drove into Vandals territory. But, the Vandals defense held them out of the end zone and they had to settle for a 21 yard field goal to take an 11 to 8 lead. And, that lead would hold for a while. The Vandals would finally get the offense unfurled in the 4th quarter. The Vandals would get a TD run from Dillon Hinton with 9:09 remaining in the game for the Vandals to take a 15 to 11 lead—their very first lead of the game. The Vandals would then score just 1:14 later with a 4 yard TD run from Stombuagh to make it 21 to 11. After a Comet TD to cut the Vandals lead to 21 to 18, the Vandals would answer with a Stombaugh to Andrew Casey 28 yard TD reception with 2:34 remaining to give the Vandals a 28 to 18 lead. The Vandals defense would force a 4 and out by the Comets on the next possession and the Vandals were able to go into victory formation and finish it off for the 28 to 18 win.
The Vandals improve to 6-0 on the season. They will be at home this coming Friday night for their Homecoming game against the 3-3 Staunton Bulldogs.
