Vandals get offense rolling, beat Hiltoppers to move to 2-0

It was a very quiet 1st quarter for the Vandals offense, but they would eventually get it going and get on their way to a 40 to 13 win over the Hillsboro Hiltoppers on Friday night at Mark Greer Field.

Hillsboro did as they wanted in the 1st quarter, as they controlled the ball on a long drive that took more than 10 minutes to complete.  The Hiltoppers were aided by a Vandals Facemask Penalty that gave them one first down and they were able to cash in on their only pass of the drive–a 5 yard TD pass with 1:54 left in the 1st quarter–to take the 7 to 0 lead.

But, the Vandals would get the offense going after that.  They would get a TD on a 28 yard run from QB Andrew Casey on the first play of the 2nd quarter and would score at the 5:21 mark of the 2nd quarter on a 35 yard pass from Casey to Kohnor Depew to take their first lead of the night.  The Vandals would get one more TD before halftime to lead 20 to 7.

After a rough opening drive, the Vandals defense was very strong against the Hiltoppers’ running attack and force them 3 and out on several drives to help the Vandals get in the position to eventually open up a 34 to 7 lead entering the 4th quarter—on their way to the 40 to 13 win.

For the Vandals, they are now 2-0 on the season.  They will have a tough road test this coming Friday night as they will travel to Pana to take on the 2-0 Panthers.
