BSE Takes Tough One-Run Loss at Wayne City in Eight Innings

Brownstown-St. Elmo baseball took an early lead but could not hang on as Wayne City came back for three late runs as the Bombers fell, 8-7, in eight innings to the Indians. After Wayne City took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, BSE tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Lucas Powell. The Bombers poured on four runs in the top of the third inning behind RBI singles from Jayce Gillespie, Nolan Wilhour and Powell as well as a sacrifice fly by Zayden Gillespie to push their lead to 5-1. The Indians responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to cut the BSE lead to 5-4 and tacked on one more in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 5-5. The Bombers broke the tie in the fifth inning as RBI singles from Zayden Gillespie and Logan Lach brought in a pair of runs for a 7-5 BSE lead. Wayne City again tied things up with a two-run sixth inning to knot the game up at 7-7. With a scoreless seventh inning by both teams, the game was sent into extra innings. After a leadoff hit by pitch to get a runner on base in the top of the eighth inning, a double play and a strike out had BSE three up and three down for the inning. A pair of strikeouts sandwiched a walk for Wayne City to give the Indians a runner at first who then stole second before a line drive single to allowed the winning run to score. With the loss, BSE drops to 2-2 on the season and will return to action today with a conference matchup at CHBC.
