Vandalia soccer walked away with a draw in their season and home opener on Monday as the Vandals and St. Anthony ended in a 1-1 tie. After a tough back and forth first half that saw the Vandals keeper Javier Gutierrez come up with a several key saves to keep the Bulldogs off the board, Vandalia was able to get on the scoreboard first. Early in the second half, junior Nic Jackson found some space and put a hard shot on goal that the keeper would not come up with and found its way into the goal as a St. Anthony defender attempted to clear it away as the keeper was out of position for a second shot giving the Vandal’s the 1-0 lead on the deflection. That lead held until late in the second half when St. Anthony evened up the score, 1-1, and the two teams walked away with a draw.
