Female Athlete of the Year:
Sophie Bowers, Vandalia – Bowers put a large explanation point on her legacy at Vandalia High School with a very impressive senior year. In Wrestling, Sophie went 42-0 her Senior year and capped it off by winning her second straight State Championship. Sophie finishes her time at VCHS at 112-18 and was a 3 time Sectional Champion, a 3 time State Qualifier and a 2 time State Champ–and she did that damage while wrestling against the guys (and going to state) her Freshman year and also battled knee and shoulder injuries. In track and field, Bowers was dynamic in the 100, 200 and 400m Dash events. She would qualify for the IHSA 1A State Finals for the second year in row, making it this year in the 400m Dash where she finished in 8th place and came up just shy of the 16-year old school record. Bowers will compete collegiately in tow sports as she will compete in both wrestling and track and field for Wartburg College.
