Girls Athletes of the Year
Hannah Brown, Vandalia – The junior thrower continued to get better in her third year of high school track and dominated the competition in her best event, the shot put. Brown competed in 12 meets and turned in first place finishes in ten of those meets and capped off her year with a fourth place finish in the IHSA 1A State Finals, her second year getting on the podium. She also broke and rebroke her own school record in the event more than once in the season. Brown also focused on the Discus more this season and would continue to improve on it as well culminating in qualifying for the IHSA State Finals and finishing in 14th place and breaking the school record in that event as well, first at the IHSA Sectional Meet and again at the State Meet to become a dual school record holder.
Sophie Bowers, Vandalia – Competing in her first full high school track season as a senior, Bowers was a force in the Sprint events. Bowers finished in the top 4, including four first place finishes, of every meet in the 100m Dash and took top 4, including four first place finishes, in every meet but one in the 200m Dash. In the 400m Dash, Bowers finished first in over half the meets competed in with five first place finishes and qualified for the IHSA 1A State Finals where she finished in 8th place and came up just shy of the 16-year old school record. Bowers held down the anchor spot in the 4×100 relay and helped the team to top 4 finishes in all but one meet. Bowers will continue to compete collegiately as she will compete in both wrestling and track and field for Wartburg College.
