South Central beats Altamont in Early Season NTC Battle – South Central Cougars was able to hold off a late surge from the Altamont Indians to come away with a 40-38 win in the NTC opener for both teams. The first quarter was a back-and-forth defensive battle that saw the Cougars with a slim 10-8 lead. Altamont picked it up on both the offensive and defensive side, holding the Cougars to just two points, while scoring 8 themselves to take a 16-12 lead going into halftime. The Cougars would come out of the break with a strong defensive showing, outscoring the Indians 13-6, highlighted by 11 points from Westin Neilson, to take a 25-22 lead going into the fourth quarter. South Central would come out with a strong offensive quarter, ultimately leading by 10, before Altamont would use a pair of threes from Zaine Miller, and Parker Bell to cut the lead to 4. The two teams would continue to trade baskets, with the Cougars finding themselves with a 4-point lead with 20 seconds left in the game. Miller would hit a three again to cut it to 39-38 with 10 seconds left. After a foul sent Callaway Smith to the free throw line, he would go 1-2 giving the Cougars a 40-38 lead with 5 seconds left. Kade Milleville would have a chance to win the game, but his last-second three-point attempt would fall just short, giving the Cougars the 40-38 win. With the win, South Central improved to 6-2 start on the season while Altamont fell 3-2 on the season.
