Vandalia's Depew and Wimberly Advance to Finals of the IHSA 1A Boys State Track Meet

Vandalia junior sprinter Kohnor Depew and freshman pole vaulter Jackson Wimberly earned themselves spots in Saturday’s Finals of the IHSA Boys 1A State Track Meet after qualifying performances during Thursday’s Prelims at Eastern Illinois University. Depew has advanced in two events after running a time of 10.89 seconds in the 100m Dash and a time of 22.22 seconds in the 200m Dash. Depew advanced in the 100 as the fastest non-heat winner time while he advanced in the 200 by winning his heat. With the top 9 advancing to the Finals in each of those events, Depew has guaranteed himself two medals in Saturday’s Finals. Wimberly is one of 11 advancing vaulters to the Finals. In the pole vault, a preset height is used to determine advancers with vaulters stopping once they reach the height in the Prelims. Thursday’s height was 12’ 5.5”, which Wimberly cleared on his second attempt at the height after already clearing the opening height of 11’ 5.75” on his first attempt and clearing 11’ 11.75” on the second attempt at that height. Wimberly will now look to finish in the top 9 to put himself on the podium for a medal.
