Vandalia baseball played tough defense and used a pair of five-run innings to shut out Flora on the road on Saturday, 10 to 0. After two scoreless innings to open the game, the Vandals went to work in the top of the third inning at the plate with three singles, a pair of doubles and a pair of walks drawn along with smart base running leading to five runs and a 5-0 lead. In the top of the fifth inning, the Vandals found themselves with two quick outs after a leadoff singled and rallied for five runs again intermingling a few hits with a few walks drawn to score five more runs and pad their lead, going up 10-0. Flora was able to get a baserunner on in the bottom of the fifth with two outs, but the Vandals defense snuffed out the threat with a groundout to end the game by run rule. Brock Willenborg went the distance on the mound, pitching the complete game shutout for the win while Andrew Casey and Drew Jones both went 2 for 2 at the plate and Chase Cearlock had 3 RBI in the game. Vandalia ends the regular season at 12-16 and will return to Flora tomorrow to play the Wolves at 4:30pm in the quarterfinals of the Newton 2A Regional.
