Vandalia junior thrower Hannah Brown, Vandalia senior sprinter Sophie Bowers and CHBC senior thrower Kyleigh Wallace have qualified for the IHSA 1A Girls State Track Meet after finishing in qualifying places or with performances meeting or surpassing the state standards at the Newton 1A Girls Sectional at Newton on Wednesday. Brown, making her third trip to State, has qualified in two events this year as she took second place in the Shot Put with a best throw of 37’ 0.5” and for the first time, she has qualified in the Discus as well with a fourth place finish with a best throw of 110’ 11” that surpassed the qualifying standard of 109’ 9”. Brown’s throw is also a Vandalia High School Girls Track School Record in the event, surpassing the previous record of 107’ 4” that was set by Riely Ward in 2022. Bowers will make her second trip to the State Meet after she took second place in the 400m Dash with a time of 59.71 seconds, a personal record for her in the event and is a time that is just 0.34 seconds off of the school record of 59.37 seconds. Wallace will make her second trip to the State Meet after she finished in third place in the Discus with a best throw of 113’ that surpassed the qualifying standard of 109’ 9”. Wallace also placed third in the Shot Put but was about two feet off of qualifying standards. The IHSA 1A Girls State Track Meet will be held at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston with Preliminaries held on Thursday, May 22.
