Altamont Defense Strong as Lady Indians Beat Dieterich 3-1 in Eight Innings


Despite four errors in the game, Altamont softball’s defense held fast to back up a 12 strikeout performance in the circle and get a 3 to 1 win in eight innings at Dieterich on Tuesday. Altamont was able to put three runners on base in the top of the first inning but all were stranded on base to end the half inning. The Lady Indians broke up the scoreless game in the top of the fourth inning as Sophia Pearcy singled to right field. She would be lifted for courtesy runner Haley Arend. Madison Tonn reached base on an error and Arend advanced to third base while Tonn ended up at second base. With two runners in scoring position, Sophia Long ground out to second base, allowing Arend to score and give the Lady Indians a 1-0 lead. After two more innings worth of scoreless softball, Dieterich was able to even up the score in the bottom of the sixth inning with a run to make it 1-1. Both teams were unable to score in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings. After a walk drawn by Grace Lemke and a single by Ella Nelson, a pair of sacrifices loaded the bases for Altamont and Tonn hit a line drive single to right field to bring in Lemke and Nelson as the Lady Indians took a 3-1 lead. Dieterich was able to put two runners on in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Altamont held strong to keep Dieterich off the board and closed out the 3-1 win. The Lady Indians are 17-8 on the season and will be take on Mulberry Grove today.
