Vandalia baseball picked up two wins on the road, beating Dieterich 5 to 3 and 10 to 6 to sweep the Saturday doubleheader. In the first game of the day, the Vandals trailed 1-0 before getting two runs on the board on back to back RBI groundouts to take a 2-1 lead. An inning later, Vandalia put up three more runs on three consecutive RBI singles from Quentyn Stombaugh, Brock Willenborg and Drew Jones to put the Vandals up 5-1. The Maroons were able to tack on two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and cut Vandalia’s lead to 5-3, but that would wrap up the scoring as Vandalia closed out the win. In the second game, Vandalia got off to a quick start with a three-run first inning. After drawing three straight walks to open the game and loading the bases, Chase Cearlock singled to left field to bring in two runs for a 2-0 lead. They added on another run in the first with Adam Buscher drawing a bases loaded walk to push the lead to 3-0. The Vandals added on a pair of third inning runs on a RBI single by Willenborg and a Stombaugh steal of home for a 5-0 lead. A RBI single by Cearlock on the top of the fourth edged the Vandals lead to 6-0. The Vandals offense kept going into the sixth inning with a RBI double from Andrew Casey, and RBI singles from Cearlock, Willenborg and Jones as Vandalia took a commanding 10-0 lead. The Maroons fought back though, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and then another four in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Vandals lead to 10-6, but Vandalia was able to stop the Dieterich surge and hold on for the 10-6 win. Vandalia is now 10-14 on the season and will be back in action today at Carlyle.
