Vandalia softball split a home doubleheader on Saturday, beating Wesclin 4 to 3 in the first game and falling to the Warriors 5 to 4 in the second game. In the first game, the Lady Vandals fell behind 3-0 before getting their scoring underway in the bottom of the fourth inning. A leadoff single from Bella Walk and a double by Mady McCall put runners at the corners and Elaina Hagy hit a line drive double to left field to bring both in to score and cut the Wesclin lead down to 3-2. With Hagy at third and one out in the inning, Madison Lupton doubled to left field to bring in Hagy and tie the game up at 3-3. Lupton stole third and then with Rebekah Miller at the plate, Lupton stole home to give the Lady Vandals the lead, 4-3. That lead would hold as each team would go scoreless across the next three innings despite Vandalia getting a runner in scoring position in the fifth inning, and the Lady Vandals got the 4-3 win.
In the second game, Wesclin again got out to a lead, 2-0, before Vandalia scored their first run on a RBI single from Miller to pull Vandalia to within a run, 2-1. Wesclin got that run back in the top of the third inning, going up 3-1, but the Lady Vandals pulled even with the Warriors with a RBI single from Katy Sefton scoring Lupton and then McCall scoring on an error in the play as the game was tied up 3-3. An inning later, Vandalia took their only lead of the game, with Ollie Whitehead scoring on a Wesclin error and putting the Lady Vandals up 4-3. The Warriors were able to regain the lead in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs to make it 5-4 and they would then hold Vandalia scoreless in the bottom of the seventh as the Lady Vandals suffered the loss. Vandalia moves to 6-16 on the season and will be on the road today as they play at Carlyle at 4:30pm.
