Vandals Can't Recover From Staunton's Two Big Innings in SCC Loss

Vandalia baseball gave up two big innings to Staunton and was unable to build enough offense to offset those run outbursts as the Vandals fell to the Bulldogs 15 to 5 in South Central Conference action on Friday. Vandalia was able to come out and score first with a run in the top of the first inning as Staunton committed an error on a ground ball from Brock Willenborg that allowed Andrew Casey to score and give the Vandals a 1-0 lead. That lead lasted only an inning until Staunton put up 7 runs in the bottom of the second inning for a 7-1 lead over Vandalia. The Vandals were able to respond in the top of the third inning as Kohnor Depew and Casey hit back to back solo home runs to start the inning and pull Vandalia within four runs, trailing 7-3. A double by Chase Cearlock scored Qwentyn Stombaugh as the Vandals deficit shrunk to 7-4. Staunton again put up a big inning though with six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Bulldogs pulled away from Vandalia, pushing their lead to 13-4. The Vandals final run of the game came in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Stombaugh to score Jack Lewis and make it a 13-5 game before two runs from Staunton in the bottom of the fifth closed out the game and Vandalia suffered the run rule loss. Vandalia is now 9-14 on the season and wrap up SCC play at 3-6. They will be back in action this morning at Dieterich at 10:00am.
