Lady Vandals Outhit Staunton But Fall in SCC Contest

Vandalia softball was able to just outhit Staunton on Friday, but the first inning made all the difference in the game as the Lady Vandals suffered a 10 to 6 loss to the Bulldogs in South Central Conference action on Friday. Staunton mixed up five hits and a pair of walks in with taking advantage of three Vandalia errors to get out to an 8-0 lead after the first inning. Vandalia got on the board in the top of the second inning as Madison Lupton led off with a single to left field and Arian Dunaway reached base on an error and that error allowed Lupton come in to score. In the next at bat, Ollie Whitehead groundout to second base and that allowed Dunaway to score as the Lady Vandals cut the Staunton lead to 8-2. The Lady Vandals cut further into their deficit in the top of the fourth inning as Elaina Hagy hit a home run to left field to bring in Kenlie Finn and Whitehead and Vandalia trailed 8-5 to end the half inning. The Bulldogs edged their lead back out to five runs after scoring a pair in the bottom of the sixth inning, going up 10-5, but Vandalia was only able to get on run back in the top of the seventh on a solo home run by Mady McCall to cut it to a 10-6 ballgame. That would be it for the game’s scoring though as the Lady Vandals stranded a pair of runners to end the game and Staunton handed Vandalia the 10-6 conference loss. Vandalia moves to 5-15 on the season and 0-7 in the SCC. They will have a quick turnaround as they have an early doubleheader today at home against Trenton Wesclin with the first game set to get underway at 10:00am.
