Vandalia baseball grabbed an early lead but couldn’t stop Carlinville’s seven run fifth inning as the Vandals fell to the Cavies 8 to 6 on Friday night. A dropped third strike in the first inning allowed Brock Willenborg to reach base and Jack Lewis to score after Lewis record the Vandals first hit of the night, a double, as the Vandals went up 1-0. Carlinville tied things up 1-1 in the second inning, but Vandalia responded in the top of the third inning after back to back singles by Andrew Casey and Lewis to start the inning before a sacrifice fly from Willenborg brought Casey in to score and put the Vandals back on top 2-1. That lead was extended out in the fourth inning as Kohnor Depew singled to second base to bring in Owen Halford to score and a double by Casey scored Drew Jones and Depew as the Vandals went up 5-1. The Cavies got on a roll in the fifth inning and put up 7 runs to take the lead, 8-5. Vandalia was able to tack on one more run in the top of the seventh inning on a single from Chase Cearlock that scored Casey, but it was not enough as the Vandals suffered the 8-6 loss. Vandalia drops to 7-12 on the season and will be in action this morning at home against Trenton Wesclin at 10:00am.
