Altamont Topples St. Anthony in NTC Battle

Altamont and St. Anthony engaged in a typical tight battle expected out of two of the top teams in the National Trail Conference with the Lady Indians shutting out St. Anthony, 3 to 0, in Effingham on Thursday night after the game had to be moved from Altamont due to field conditions. Altamont’s first run of the game came in the bottom of the second inning as Sophia Long singled to right field and that allowed Cecilia Pearcy to score on the throw for a 1-0 Lady Indians lead. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Ella Nelson led the inning off with a double and C. Pearcy reached base on a Bulldog error and on that same error, both runners advanced to put Lady Indians at second and third. Sophia Pearcy singled on a bunt to score Nelson and edge the lead to 2-0. C. Pearcy then scored in the next at bat with a steal of home as Altamont’s lead became 3-0. St. Anthony put two runners on in the top of the seventh inning, but three straight strikeouts by the Bulldogs ended the threat and closed out the 3-0 for Altamont. Lady Indians senior pitcher Grace Lemke was once again dominant on the mound as she went all seven innings and allowed just three hits across those innings while striking out 17 batters and walking none. With of the St. Anthony runners being caught stealing and the other two stranded on base, Lemke faced just two more than the minimum amount of batters in the game as the Lady Indians defense was once again strong behind Lemke with the opportunities that were given. Altamont is now 15-5 on the season and 5-2 in the NTC as they sit in second place at 5-2 in the conference moving a spot ahead of St. Anthony after the head to head win over the Bulldogs and sitting behind first place WSS who is 7-0 in conference play. The Lady Indians will be back in action on Monday as they start play in the NTC Tournament, taking on Dieterich at 6:00pm on the East Diamond at Evergreen Park in Effingham.
