Pro Wire Athlete of the Week

Our Pro Wire Athletes of the Week for April 26 are Vandalia Boys track senior sprinter Ian Whitehead, Altamont softball senior Grace Lemke and South Central softball senior Bri Buchanan.

Whitehead has now put his name in the VCHS Boys Track Record books for a third time, this time as an individual after breaking the school record in the 400m Dash. On Tuesday at the Cumberland Pirate Invite, Whitehead’s first place time of 51.04 seconds beat the previous VCHS school record of 51.36 that had been held by Ryan Ambuehl since 2013. Earlier this season, Whitehead was a part of the school record breaking 4×100 relay team and is also in the record books as a member of the 2024 record breaking 4×400 relay team.

Lemke reached a milestone this week that is an elite club in high school softball as she notched her 1,000th career strikeout in Altamont’s 2-1 win at Vandalia. Lemke now stands at 1,014 career strikeouts and is averaging around 15 strikeouts a game this season with a career high 28 strikeouts in a game against T-Town two weeks ago and Thursday’s 20 strikeout game was her third game this season of 20 K or more.

Buchanan has been on a tear this week for the Lady Cougars. In South Central softball’s three games this week, Buchanan went 6 of 7 at the plate with four runs scored, and 10 RBI. She went 3 for 3 twice this week and in Wednesday’s win, Buchanan’s 5 RBI in the game came off of a double and a grand slam. With Friday’s game being rained out, Buchanan ended the week batting .857 with a .889 on base percentage and an incredible slugging percentage of 2.00 after tallying 14 total bases from 7 at bats.
