South Central overcame a slow start in the first half to dominate St. Elmo-Brownstown in the second half as the Cougars beat the Eagles 40 to 29 in the quarterfinals of the South Central 1A Regional on Monday night. SEB would get on the board first in the game before the South Central hit a three-pointer to take the lead at 3-2. The Eagles then went on a 10-5 run to lead 13-8 at the end of the first quarter. South Central came out strong to start the second quarter with a 5-0 run that would tie the game up at 13-13. SEB would flip the switch and go on a 9-2 run in the latter half of the quarter though to regain the lead and have a 22-15 advantage at halftime. The Cougars began the third quarter much like they did the second, and would sustain that energy as a 9-4 run gave them the 29-26 lead to end the third. Each team would hit just one shot from the field in the third quarter, a three-pointer for SEB and a regular basket for the Cougars. However, in seven trips to the free throw line in the quarter, South Central would go 9 of 14 from the line and that would be the difference in a 11-3 run to close out the win for the Cougars over the Eagles. South Central improves to 19-12 on the season and advance to the Semifinals where they will have to square off with top-seeded Dieterich at 6:00pm on Wednesday. For SEB, their season comes to a close at 13-18.
