South Central Edges WSS For Fifth Place at NTC Tournament

South Central and Windsor/Stew-Stras battled from tip-off to the final buzzer and the Cougars came away with the very slim one point win, 51-50, over the Hatchets in the Fifth Place game of the National Trail Conference Tournament on Saturday. It would be a back and forth, tit for tat game from the get go as South Central trailed by just a point at the end of the first quarter as Seth Bergmann put up five points in the quarter to lead the Cougars. Westin Neilson would heat up in the second quarter as South Central outscored WSS 14-12 in the second quarter behind eight points from Neilson as they took a one-point lead, 23-22, at halftime. Bergmann would have the hot hand after halftime, with seven points in the third quarter as South Central and WSS would be even, with each scoring 11 points, as the Cougars stayed ahead by one, 34-33, to start the fourth quarter. The game would come down to how the Cougars could do at the free throw line as they made nine trips to the line, going 11 for 18. That effort would be just enough as the Cougars and Hatchets each dropped in 17 points in the quarter and South Central held on to the one point lead to claim the 51-50 win. South Central moves to 15-7 on the season and will be back in action at home on Tuesday when they host Webber.
