Vandalia girls wrestling took Fourth Place in the first ever Girls Princeton Invitational Tournament on Saturday. The boys version of the tournament has long been known as one of the most competitive wrestling tournaments of the season and the girls version in its first year boasted competition from 27 schools. The Lady Vandals finished with 85.5 points behind team champion Geneseo with 200.5 points, second place LaSalle Peru with 94.0 points and Hampshire with 93 points. Senior Sophie Bowers at 125lbs would be the Lady Vandals lone champion on the day with sophomore Gracey Simmons taking 2nd at 235lbs, freshman Amelia Watterson taking 3rd place at 140lbs and junior Brynn Swyers at 155lbs and sophomore Violet Gray at 170lbs both taking fourth place in their classes.
110lbs – Marley Black: Lost to Addison Yacko of Streator (the eventual champion in the class) by Fall in 0:38 in First Round. Lost to Makayla Bros of Geneseo in First Round Wrestlebacks by Fall in 3:02.
125lbs – Sophie Bowers: Beat Ryleigh Ericks of Rock Island by Tech Fall (15-0) in 3:17 in the First Round. Beat Carolina Huertero of Freeport by Fall in 0:32 in the Quarterfinals. Beat Kylie Mathis of Sherrard in the Semifinals by Fall in 0:44. Beat Bella Curcuru of Geneseo by Fall in 2:00 in the Championship to take 1st Place.
140lbs – Amelia Watterson: After a First Round BYE, Lost to Vanesa Penaloza of Freeport in the Quarterfinals by Fall in 3:02. Beat Isabella Randolph of Washington by Fall in 0:57 in the First Round Wrestlebacks. Beat Kaisley Shotkoski of Mahomet-Seymour by Fall in 2:38 in the Wrestleback Quarterfinals. Beat Brooke Shollender of Geneseo by Fall in 1:24 in the Wrestleback Semifinals. Beat Avalyn Edwall of LaSalle by Fall in 2:14 in the Third Place Match to finish in 3rd Place.
155lbs – Brynn Swyers: Lost to Akira Schick of Rock Island by Fall in 1:15 in the First Round. Beat Liberlee Englund of East Moline by Fall in 0:48 in the First Round Wrestlebacks. Beat Lidia Escamilla of Hampshire by Major Decision, 10-0, in the Wrestleback Quarterfinals. Beat Jayda Rosenow of Erie by Sudden Victory, 11-8, in the Wrestleback Semifinals. Lost to Akira Schick by Tech Fall (15-0( in 4:00 in the Third Place Match to finish in 4th Place.
170lbs – Violet Gray: Beat Delila Kent of Mendota by Major Decision, 10-1, in the Quarterfinals. Lost to Annelise Tavira of Hampshire in the Semifinals by Tech Fall (21-6) in 2:00 in the Semifinals. Lost to Jordyn Graf of Genoa by Fall in 3:30 in the Third Place match to finish in 4th Place.
235lbs – Gracey Simmons: Beat Lauren Ray of Hampshire by Fall in 0:42 in the Quarterfinals. Beat Atalyssa Craig of Dunlap by Fall in 0:36 in the Semifinals. Lost to Phoenix Molina of Tolono Unity by Fall in 0:26 in the Championship match to finish in 2nd Place.
