Wednesday’s matchup between two of the top teams in the National Trail Conference did not disappoint as pitchers Taegan Webster and Grace Lemke put on a show combining to account for 32 of the games outs by strikeout. After three scoreless innings that saw the Indians put just three runners on base and the Cougars put just four base runners on, South Central was able to break through in the bottom of the fourth inning. Webster hit a leadoff single and Amelia Montes walked to put runners at first and second. Kinlee Thompson followed up with a fly ball to left and reached base on an error with Webster scoring on the play to put the Cougars on the scoreboard for a 1-0 lead. With two outs in the inning and runners at second and third, Montes would score on a passed ball as the South Central lead grew to 2-0. Each team would go three up, three down in the fifth inning and Altamont’s lone runner in the top of the sixth would be stranded after reaching base on a hit by pitch as the score remained 2-0 with the Cougars leading. In the bottom of the sixth. Montes would single to left field to get on base and would steal second to get into scoring position. Again, Thompson would hit a line drive and reach base on error as Montes would score her second run of the game and the Cougars would go up 3-0. A pair of strikeouts by Lemke would end the sixth. With two outs in the top of the seventh and down to their final out, Cecilia Pearcy would single for Altamont to get a runner aboard, but a strikeout would end the game as South Central got the 3-0 win. South Central improves to 18-8 on the season and 7-1 in the NTC. The Cougars will host Grayville today. Altamont drops to 11-7 on the season and 4-2 in the NTC and will have another NTC matchup coming up today as they will be at Effingham to take on the current top team in the NTC, St. Anthony who is 8-0 in conference play.
