South Central Drops First Game of Wooden Bat Classic

South Central baseball came up short on Friday night, dropping the first game of their own Wooden Bat Classic, 5-4, to Flora. The Cougars first run of the game came in the bottom of the third as Brody Markley scored when Callaway Smith reached base on an error, giving South Central a 10- lead. Flora would answer with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth though, taking a 2-1 lead over the Cougars. The Wolves tacked on another two runs in the top of the fifth inning and South Central would trail 4-1. An RBI groundout from Trevan Sidwell scores Evan Hoover as South Central cut the Flora lead to 4-2. After a scoreless sixth inning, Flora would add one final run on in the top of the seventh inning to get their lead back to three runs, 5-2, over South Central. The Cougars would load the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh as Sidwell and Colton Smith were both hit by a pitch and Coen West singled to right field. Maddox Robb then hit a line drive single to right field bringing in Sidwell and Smith to cut the Flora lead to 5-4. A fielder’s choice out and a strike out would cut the Cougars comeback bid short as South Central fell 5-4. The Cougars drop to 10-6 on the season and will continue play in their Wooden Bat Classic today, taking on Woodlawn at 10:00am and North Clay at 4:00pm.
