Gus Kirk takes 1st, Asher Sefton places 3rd at Bantam State Tournament

4 members of the Vandalia Junior Wrestling Club traveled to Bolingbrook over the weekend to compete in the Illinois Bantam Championships. The Bantam division consists of 7&8 year olds, with the option for 6 year olds to bump up and wrestle as well. Gus Kirk went 3-0 on the day to take the championship belt in the 62B weight class and finish his season undefeated at the Bantam level. After placing 3rd here a year ago, Kirk became only the 2nd Vandal Wrestler to win a Bantam State Title. After a first round bye, top seeded Gus Kirk won by major decision 12-0 to start his day off. He gave up his first points on the day in his semifinal and trailed 5-0 heading into the second period where Gus secured a cradle and picked up the fall in 1:26. In the finals, Gus won by decision 3-0, his points again coming off of a cradle.

Asher Sefton bumped up from the tot division to compete in the 37lb weight class. After having a bye in his first two matches Asher lost a hard fought match in the semifinals by decision 8-3. He bounced back in the consolation semifinals with a 20-6 major decision win to advance to the 3rd place match. In Asher’s final match he trailed 8-3 going into the 3rd period but was able to score a reversal and 2 different sets of nearfall to win by decision 10-8 and take 3rd in his first state tournament appearance
