Comets Fall to Mt. Carmel 61-53 at Duster Thomas Classic

The Greenville Comets fell to Mt. Carmel 61-53 in their opening round game at the Duster Thomas Classic in Pinckneyville on Thursday afternoon.

After trailing 28-21 at the half, the Comets went on a run to start the third quarter to cut the Golden Aces lead down to 3. Greenville could not sustain the run though, and ended the 3rd being outscored 21-13 in the period and trailed 49-34 at the start of the 4th quarter. The Comets went on another run in the 4th, this time outscoring Mt. Carmel 19-12 in the quarter, behind 12 points from Fletcher Manhart, but came up just short again with that run, falling 61-53.

Manhart led the Comets int he game with 21 points, all coming on three-pointers. Manhart’s 7 threes in the game tied the tournament record for most made 3s in a game.

Jack Schaufelberger finished with 11 points, Peyton McCullough tallied 9 points and Gabe Lager had 6 points for the Comets. Nathan Grull added 5 points and Desmond Gardner had one point in the game.

Greenville will now play Chester at 10:30am on Friday in the consolation side of the tournament bracket.
