Vandalia Senior Wide Receivers and Defense Leave Their Mark on Vandal Football Program

The 2019 Vandals football team will go down in history as the first team to win 11 games in a season after going 11-1 this year and reaching the third round of the 3A playoffs. The Vandals were strong on both offense and defense and the numbers put up were historic.

The Vandalia defense only allowed an average of 13 points per game this season and the offense put up the 2nd most points in a season in school history with 454.

Vandalia’s defense reached over 400 yards lost for their opponents this season by forcing 87 tackles for negative yardage, 51 of those tackles being sacks. Zane Ulmer led the way with the most overall tackles for the Vandals, while Robby Durbin and Tiler Worker led the team with the most tackles for negative yards.

During the Carlinville game, the Vandals had 2 wide receivers with over 100 yards in the game, Gaven Davis and Thomas Ritchey, marking only the 3rd time that has happened in school history.

Gaven Davis (30 for 697 yards, 9 TD) and Garrett Austin (30 for 505 yards, 8 TD) became just the 2nd receiving duo in school history to reach 500 receiving yards in the same season.  The first and only other pair to accomplish this feat were Mike Orr (32 for 813 yards, 12 TD) & Mike Hayner (37 for 729 yards, 7 TD) during the 1976 season.
