Matthew Wells ended his career for Vandalia football last Saturday and will leave the program with his name, in several areas, among the best in Vandal football history.
Among career records, Matthew now holds the school record for best QB record (26-8) and most postseason games played in (7). He accounts for 2 of the top 5 best passing games in school history and joins Josh Reams as the only two quarterbacks to ever throw 5 touchdown passes in a single game, each doing so twice during their careers. Wells ends his career at the top of the career total offense list with 34 games played (2nd most in school history behind Marcus Zimmerman’s 39) in which he accumulated 6,381 yards (passing and rushing combined), 81 total touchdowns (passing and rushing) and averaged 187.68 combined passing/rushing yards per game.
His final career passing line stands at 34 games, 293 completions in 537 attempts, 5,383 passing yards, 67 passing TD’s 54.56% completion rate and an average of 158.32 passing yards per game. Matthew threw for 100+ yards in 28 of his 34 career games at QB including throwing for over 200 yards in seven of those games.
For single season records, Matthew broke the school record during his senior season for least amount of interceptions thrown (5) and most touchdowns thrown with 24. Matthew also broke his own record for most 100+ yard passing games in a season with 11 this year besting the 10 games he recorded in 2017. He is also the only Vandal to record over 2,000 total yards of offense in 2 different seasons.
